Reasons to Find Time to Cuddle With Your Dog

Reasons to Find Time to Cuddle With Your Dog

Cuddling With DogsTo cuddle is to hold close in one’s arms as a way of showing love or affection. A cuddle is essentially a prolonged and affectionate hug. People enjoy cuddling. Most dogs do, too.

Why do dogs love to cuddle?

Warmth

If you were to look at puppies as an observer, you might notice they’ll cuddle together– they’re doing so for warmth. Indeed, dogs cuddle each other for warmth, and they’ll also cuddle with their owners for the same reason.

Over the centuries, cuddling with humans played a significant role in the domestication of dogs. Hunters would cuddle with their dogs at night to keep warm. If you ever heard the term “three dog night,” that came from the idea that really cold nights meant a person would want to cuddle up with at least three dogs to keep from freezing to death. So, over the years, humans and dogs have bonded thanks to cuddle time, keeping warm during colder weather.

Increase in Oxytocin

Besides warmth, cuddling is a way to show affection. It has been found to be a stress reliever, too. Cuddling increases oxytocin levels in both dogs and humans. Oxytocin is “the love hormone.” It’s associated with good things like social bonding and trust.

Interestingly, some dogs are more likely to cuddle than others. This is probably because certain dogs have been bred to be purposely independent and less affectionate. Other breeds, such as lap dogs (small enough to be held in a person’s lap), have temperaments predisposed to cuddling and affection.
